Do you love your hair and wouldn’t change one thing about it? If you answered yes, I’m guessing you are in the 5-10% of women who would positively respond to that question. If you are vehemently shaking your head, you are with the resounding army of females shouting, “No! I hate X about my hair!” While I fall somewhere in the middle of those two categories, I was excited to learn about a new company called Formulate. This hair care company offers customized shampoo and conditioner that are specific to your needs, wants, lifestyle and environment. Take a look at my product review of Formulate.
Product Review of Formulate
Please note: I was invited by Formulate to review their product in exchange for a complimentary shampoo and conditioner customized to my preferences. All opinions are 100% my own.
First Impression: You start by taking a short survey so that Formulate’s hair engineers and chemists can get to know your hair goals. Some example questions they ask you include where you live (climate), what look you are trying to achieve (more volume, less dryness, increased growth, etc.), and your current hair condition. For me, this included the following:
When my product arrived, I first noticed their high quality packaging, personalized material, and the fact that it came with pumps! I almost immediately put some of the product into travel bottles as I had two week-long work trips coming up and couldn’t wait to try this stuff out. (Also, I hate hotel shampoo and conditioner.)
After First Use: The shampoo and conditioner smell great! You also get to pick your own scent which is a nice added feature. The shampoo doesn’t lather a lot, but I’m pretty sure that’s what nice shampoo is supposed to do. 🙂 The conditioner was basically sucked right up into my hair. It seriously absorbed so fast! My hair felt super clean, smelled delicious and felt good after the first wash…but when I woke up the next morning, my hair felt (and looked) greasy. (I tend to shower at night and sleep on wet hair.)
After Second Use: After going a bit overboard on my conditioner use the first time, I just used it on the ends of my hair for the second use. This resulted in a less greasy feeling head of hair thankfully! If you noticed, I did put in my survey that hydration and deep conditioning were key goals for me. I think I may have overestimated how much I actually needed this! I would encourage you to thoughtfully fill out your survey and ask the Formulate team questions if you aren’t sure what to rank in terms of needs/wants.
Third & Subsequent Uses: I’m really trying to only wash, conditioner and dry my hair every other day. Because of this, I have continued to only use the conditioner on the tips of my hair. I’ve noticed that my hair does feel a lot smoother and my scalp doesn’t feel as dry and itchy.
It was really fun to pretend to be a hair model! 🙂
Overall, I would give my product review of Formulate an 8.5/10. I know I’ll see more results with continued usage and hope the deep conditioning will help me get through Cleveland’s long, cold (and dry) winters!
What much does this cost and how long will it last? A 3 shipment supply is $130, shipping included. Each shipment has a 450ml bottle of custom shampoo & conditioner. Dependent on length of hair and weekly use, each single shipment will last for between 6-9 weeks. If you’re a 6 week person the package ends up being a 4.5 month supply overall, if you’re a 9 week person it’s a little under a 7 month supply! At $130 that’s a little over $43.00 per shipment. Certainly not in the bargain brand range but:
- it’s customized for each person
- it’s still under the cost of most in salon purchased brands!
What if I don’t like it and I still have 2 more shipments left? If you are not happy with your initial customized formulas and don’t want to continue the feedback|reformulation process for future shipments, you can initiate a FULL REFUND within the first 30 days of use.
- If you have fully used the initial shipment, but no longer wish to receive the 2nd, and 3rd shipments, you can initiate a partial refund prior to their 2nd shipment being sent out.
What’s IN this shampoo and conditioner? Tell me about the ingredients: They have a LONG list of ingredients, and each order will include the full specific list for both the shampoo and conditioner, but those bottles will NEVER include sulfates, parabens, silicones, or ingredients tested on animals.
They are more than happy to address any other allergens a customer might have, all you need to do is email them at email@example.com!
