If you’ve never lost your luggage, you don’t know the anxiety that one feels while waiting around the baggage carousel and not seeing your belongings appear. The first time I lost my suitcase I was at the Fayetteville/Bentonville airport in Arkansas on a business trip. As I stood impatiently at carousel 4, I noticed that bags were dwindling and mine was nowhere to be seen. That’s when it hit me that I hadn’t packed an extra set of clothes OR my makeup OR my toiletries in my carry on. Then a wave of panic rolled over me as I spoke to the airport attendant and realized I wouldn’t be getting my bags until tomorrow afternoon…AFTER my presentation. Did I mention I was wearing athletic clothes? Granted, they were my “nice athletic clothes”, but definitely not appropriate for the conference I was presenting at early the next morning. After that trip, I realized what was essential to pack in my carry on (and wear on a business trip flight). If you don’t want to learn this lesson a hard way, I suggest you read part IV of my Adulting 101 series on what to pack in your carry on!
P.S. An awesome giveaway is detailed at the end of the post, so keep reading!
What To Pack In Your Carry On
Important documents & items you DEFINITELY don’t want to lose (ID, $$, passport, boarding pass, keys, etc.): Don’t pack items in your checked luggage that would crush you if you lost them. For me, that means keeping my lap top, camera, and more expensive jewelry with me. If you have any medications, it’s a best practice to also keep those in your carry on.
A full outfit + essential toiletries (& makeup): Per my example, you really don’t want to have to present at a conference in athletic wear…without deodorant. I suggest packing hand sanitizer, face wipes, toothbrush & toothpaste, lip gloss, mascara, and tissues…oh ya, and deodorant in your carry on. Remember to place your liquids in a quart-sized bag!
Scarf or Sweater + Socks: I am always FREEZING on planes. I like to wear leggings with a long comfy sweater and flats while flying, but I tend to always pack a pashmina and socks in case I’m chilly! Another best practice is to wear your clunkier items that are hard to pack. Think boots, coats, bulky sweaters, etc.
Snacks: Airport food is PRICEY. If I’m staying domestic, I like to pack tangerines, granola bars and (of course) gummies to curb my hunger during layovers. It’s also a great idea to bring an empty water bottle that you can fill once you’re past security. Check out this video of TSA approved snacks that I recently found. Another item to keep handy is gum. If you have sensitive ears, it helps to chew something during takeoff and landing.
Entertainment (Books, Magazines, etc.): I have come to cherish my flying time! I view it as a time to unplug, relax, write, and/or sleep. I always pack a journal, the latest book I’m reading, headphones and a sleeping mask. In this day and age, it’s probably silly for me to remind you to pack your cell phone and charger in your carry on…
